Tips and Techniques: Prepare

These family session tips are intended for both clients and photographers. If you have any other suggestions, feel free to comment!

1) Choose your location ahead of time. Whether it be at a park, in the city or at your own home, you may want to scope out the location ahead of time if possible. If you need suggestions, please ask!

2) Coordinate outfits ahead of time. (see my previous post on this). Its not necessary to match, but its a good idea to coordinate.

3) Dont be afraid to share your ideas. If you have a pose or specific "look" you want to try, let me know! I am more than willing to try something new.

4) That being said, dont be afraid to allow me to take control. This is especially important if we are photographing your kids. Don't worry if the they are looking at the camera or not- thats the my job. If I need your help- I will ask. I cannot tell you how many times a portrait was ruined because everyone is looking at the camera EXCEPT mom or dad, who are busy making sure everyone else is looking.

5) Mom/Dad- make sure your little ones are well rested and fed before the shoot. Also feel free to bring a favorite toy for a fun prop or just for comfort. Its not necessary for parents to bring a "helper" (such as grandma, or a friend) unless otherwise requested by the photographer- its usually best to keep the session limited to those being photographer to keep a relaxed atmosphere.

6) Have fun!
