Family Portraits: Fashion

-Keep it simple. Solid colors and small prints work best as they don’t distract the viewers eye from the faces in the portrait. Children can get away with wearing bolder colors and patterns, just avoid logos or t-shirts with images that might be distracting. Medium to Dark colors a preferable because they not only slenderize, but they also dont detract attention from the subjects as much as lighter colors do. A causal look usually works best for family/children photos, but avoid anything too casual.

-Spaghetti straps and strapless tops are rarely flattering. Minimize bare arms and legs by wearing long sleeves and long pants (this rule is mostly applicable to ladies). The camera (or more accurately, the lens) will sometimes exaggerate and distort those areas, and the eyes will be naturally drawn to the exposed skin and contrasting light. Also, avoid really low or wide necklines, and ill-fitting (too tight or too loose) clothing.

-When choosing outfits, we sometimes forget about shoes and accessories, but shoes may be visible in some of your photos, and accessories can be really fun, so consider them when putting your outfits together.

-Dont forget hair and make up (photoshop can only do so much)- but remember, keep it simple. Bring brushes/combs and a make-up kit for touch ups.

-Although its not necessary to buy matching sweaters (okay, PLEASE dont do that), it is a good idea to color coordinate family members for portraits. Choose a few different coordinating colors so that everyone has options, yet the portrait still feels consistent throughout. You want there to be a visual relationship between all family members. Remember to keep the style consistent as well (casual, dressy, etc..).

Here are a couple of family looks I put together to give you some ideas...

These are only a few basic guidelines, but hopefully it gives you a general idea of what to wear for your next portrait session.
